The nimble, affordable SonicWave 641 Wi-Fi 6 access point

Meet the SonicWall SonicWave 641 Wi-Fi 6 access point. It uses 802.11ax. This is the most advanced technology of its’ kind available. The SonicWave 641 is cloud-managed using SonicWall’s Wireless Network Manager. It is the first of their Wi-Fi 6 offerings, the other being the SonicWave 681.

The SonicWave 641 offers a number of cool features that provide a really nice experience. To mention a few; there’s Rogue AP and device detection, Neighboring network avoidance, and longer battery life. There’s also integrated Switch management, Automatic firmware updates, and incredible ease-of-deployment (largely plug-and-play). Plus, it integrates beautifully with Wireless Network Manager and WiFi Planner.

Wireless Network Manager

SonicWall’s Wireless Network Manager allows you the ultimate flexibility and reliability of the cloud. It’s an intuitive and scalable centralized wireless and switching network management system. It unifies multiple tenants, locations and zones. This provides integrated management for thousands of SonicWave access points and SonicWall Switches.

From a single pane of glass, Wireless Network Manager delivers rich analytics, powerful features and simplified onboarding. This cloud-based infrastructure simplifies access, control and troubleshooting for organizations of any size. Not only that, Wireless Network Manager can be deployed and accessed across multiple regions from anywhere. All you need is an internet connection.

Your users will enjoy the degree of access to applications and websites from their mobile devices, even where cellular network is least. And you can control access to things like social media unwanted or malicious websites.

Performance

As already stated, the SonicWave 641 Wi-Fi 6 access point utilizes 802.11ax technology. This improves performance in high-density environments (read more about Wi-Fi 6 here). Plus, the use of 1024 QAM allows more data to pass through. And, 802.11ax provides enhancements in MU-MIMO, with both uplink and downlink capabilities.

Additionally, 802.11ax works in both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. This means latency is reduced by 75%. The result is overall throughput improvement of up to 400%, with nominal data rate improvement of 37% compared to 802.11ac Wave 2.

The SonicWave 641 is a wireless 4×4:4 MU-MIMO access point, that can easily handle 150 or more clients per radio, and probably more. It has 8 internal antennas. It has 1 x 2.5GbE ethernet interface, and the SonicWave 681 has 1 x 5GbE ethernet interface.

Gigabit Ethernet Connectivity

The SonicWave series are centrally managed by SonicWall network security appliances running SonicOS 7.1.x or higher. It requires a 2.5 Gigabit connection to the SonicWall appliance to take full advantage of its’ data throughput capability.

SonicWave 641 Wi-Fi 6 access point features

And not only are processor speeds faster, but beamforming allows for a more direct connection that
is faster and more reliable. Improved power control methods help to avoid interference with nearby networks, making for a better experience. And Target Wake Time management helps preserve battery life in mobile devices.

Most SonicWave access points include a separate radio dedicated to security, which performs rogue AP detection, passive scanning and packet capturing. SonicWave access points also feature zero-wait DFS. This identifies and avoids interference with radar systems. It also eliminates the wait associated with being booted from one DFS channel and finding another to connect with.

It’s also important to note that the access points aren’t simply traffic cops; they also provide deep-packet-inspection scanning of encrypted traffic.

Because the SonicWave 641 operates on the 802.11ax standard, it provides unparalleled performance, security and power management. It’s ideal for high-density environments, and is managed via the cloud using SonicWall’s Wireless Network Manager.
