Fortinet FG-200F firewall

Fortinet FG-200F firewall

Fortinet’s FortiGate firewalls offer strong security at a good price point and the FortiGate 200F Next-Gen firewall is no exception. It is a very powerful, new mid-to-enterprise grade firewall. It could be thought of as the successor to the FG-200E.

The Fortinet FG-200F features throughput speeds well above similar competition (16 times faster than others in the IPsec VPN category, according to Fortinet). But throughput is just one reason why this new firewall stands out.

The other reason? SD-WAN (software-defined wide area network). Purpose-built to handle networking duties and lock-down security duties at the same time.

What’s an SD-WAN firewall?

Well, the FortiGate 200F Next-Gen firewall can do what it does because of its extraordinary new SD-WAN ASIC processor. It is called the SoC4, and this innovative, first-of-its-kind processor is specifically designed for SD-WAN networking. As a result, when you drop it under the hood of a purpose-built firewall like the FortiGate series, you end up with a beast of a firewall that’s really a dual appliance.

It’s a big deal because SD-WAN allows offices to connect over the internet. And, when you have SD-WAN built into your firewall, you can do so quite securely. Additionally, a SD-WAN firewall eliminates the need for a dedicated network connection. Fortinet is no longer the only firewall vendor with this ability, but they were the first, and are arguably still the best at it.

What are FortiCare and FortiGuard support contracts, and how do I choose one of these?

Good question. When you purchase a FortiGate 200F, you have several options to go along with the firewall itself. These support contracts ensure that your firewall performs at its highest level, for as long as possible. The options on the right combine FortiCare and FortiGuard. Basically, without these support options in place, a firewall would be an expensive doorstop.

What are they, then?

FortiCare gives you global tech support on a per-product basis. Consequently, you’ll receive a timely response to any technical issues with your appliance, as well as complete visibility on ticket resolution progress. Also, it includes firmware upgrades and access to the support portal and associated technical resources. In addition, there’s reporting on technical incidents (via the web, chat, and telephone), and a hardware return option (continued…)

FortiGuard is the constantly self-updating security part of your firewall. In other words, it’s what makes it a firewall. Each option includes a range of security services designed to tackle the most advanced Internet threats at any given time. For example, it includes AntiVirus, Advanced Malware Protection, and Content Filtering. In addition, you get Sandboxing, AntiSpam, Email Security, Botnet Protection, and more.
