Wow. And just like that, the FortiAP 831F is released on an unsuspecting public. Within the range of Wi-Fi 6 appliances, these would be a step up from, well… just about anything.
We’ll just let Fortinet explain it:
“This high throughput enterprise class 802.11ax indoor AP provides three radios and 8 spatial streams. This top-of-the line access point supports OFDMA, a 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet port, plus an additional 1 Gbps Ethernet port for PoE diversity. The AP can provide 24/7 scanning across both bands while still providing access on both the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands. The integral BLE radio can be used for beacons and locationing applications.”
So, it’s a Wi-Fi 6 (of course), 8×8 MU MIMO access point with nine (count ’em NINE) antennas, both internal and external. The FAP 831F runs at up to 1.14 Gbps and 4.8 Gbps data rate on it’s 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, respectively. This AP is definitely enterprise-grade.
Features of the FAP 831F
The FAP 831F provides 24/7 scanning across both bands and still access both the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands. The integral BLE radio can be useful for beacons and locationing applications. And it’s Fortinet-secure: Integrated Firewall, IPS, Application Control, and Web Filter protect the wireless LAN from the latest security threats. Of course.
Another sort of big feature is OFDMA. The FAP 831F has it, and that’s a good thing. OFDMA is an extension of an earlier architecture, OFDM. Both of these divide a channel into smaller, easy-to-manage units or sub-channels, called subcarriers. Each of those sub-carriers then sends “frames,” or “packets,” consecutively to the receiver.
Basically, an OFDMA device sends these data packets more efficiently. As a result, your FAP 831F delivers a lot less latency, and a lot better coverage. In addition, you experience lower interference and improved flexibility. This leads to increased overall efficiency in small-packet applications in dense environments.
Is the FAP 831F a good fit for me?
The FAP 831F is ideal for high-density public environments. Since it’s ideal for faster browsing and downloads from mobile devices, companies with 5G deployments and offices with high-bandwidth usage will also benefit. Manage it either by the built-in WLAN controller of your FortiGate, or the easy-to-navigate FortiAP Cloud portal.
But since we’re premier Fortinet specialists, Corporate Armor is your best bet if you want to find out more about this powerful, exciting, new access point. Our advice will be driven by your unique needs, nothing more.
